La Senda Verde animal refuge- Bolivia

This animal refuge is located in Coroico, near La Paz in Bolivia. This is a privately funded animal refuge, when we visited initially I was really interested in helping out this amazing cause. The refuge caters for any animal that needs help or refuge, this includes bears, monkeys, snakes, dogs, parrots, turtles etc.. The work carried here varied tremendously, we took care of the animals daily as well as the following:

Complex web system
Designed and created a complex web application for the refuge, this enabled the refuge to:

• recruit volunteers, advertise positions
• receive donations, general and particular to a specific cause animal
• update the public by illustrating what animals they have, and their histories
• kept a database of information on each animal, history, vaccinations etc

Business assistance and Promotional work
We helped to create goals for the refuge, and this producing a business plan:

• met and created deals with companies in La Paz to bring more visitors to the refuge
• designed and created fliers and book marks to advertise the refuge
• created promotional videos for the refuge
• advertised the refuge on other social communities including facebook
• planned future developments in the area to attract more visitors

Future developments
The major plan of the refuge is to build awareness through education and also to have an extra source of income for the refuge, this part we are currently developing will provide

• access to schools worldwide, each class or group will be given access to various multimedia information including movies, quizzes etc in exchange for a minimal fee which will fund the refuge
• This will enable the kids to be educated on specific animals, and also to become aware on the environmental dangers they face and how they can help
• Projects can be added, so the public can see where the donations are going, and the progress made, for example releasing an animal back into the wild..
• integrate the refuge and surrounding community to our existing non-profit organization volunteercause.org

Technical Information
As the work was varied, so were the technologies used

• Web application was built using objeect oriented PHP, Flash, html, JavaScript.
• Used smarty templates to seperate the html, flash and front end to the php/mysql back end.
• Associated database was built using MySQL.
• Graphics were designed with paint shop pro, fireworks.
